Anxiety and depression are two different mental health illnesses.  Although depression and anxiety are not the same, they do have some similar elements. In addition to having some similarities,  depression and anxiety often occur together.  It is unknown why the two mental health illnesses occur together so often.  While depression is usually considered a  low energy state and anxiety is considered a high energy state, there appears to be a link between the two.  Often when a person has depression, they also experience a lot of anxiety.
Depression
Depression is more than just feeling sad, it is a mental health illness that can affect your physical and mental health. It can be hard to tell if you have depression or if you are just going through a rough patch. Symptoms of depression can include feeling sad and miserable for two or more weeks. In addition, over the last two weeks, you may have lost interest or pleasure in activities that you usually enjoy. Other symptoms of depression may include:
  • Weight loss or gain
  • Sleeping problems
  • Fatigue
  • Feelings of worthlessness
  • Thoughts of suicide

Anxiety
Anxiety Disorder is the most common mental health condition in Australia!  It is normal for people to experience anxiety at certain times in their life.  Symptoms can include:
  • Racing heart
  • Rapid breathing
  • Sweaty palms
  • Butterflies in the stomach
  • Burst of energy
An person has an anxiety disorder when anxiety starts to severely impact a persons life and health.  Rather than feeling anxious in response to a danger, a person with anxiety disorder will experience anxiety in situations that they perceive as dangerous. There are a range of specific anxiety conditions including Social phobia, Specific Phobia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Panic Disorder.

Anxiety and Depression
Having both anxiety and depression can be quite debilitating.  Sometimes when anxiety and depression occur together, the symptoms of both depression and anxiety are more severe that when they occur alone. In addition, the symptoms may take longer to resolve, making it harder to treat.

Both Anxiety and depression are mental health conditions that can be treated. If you or someone that you know are suffering from symptoms of anxiety and depression, it is important to seek help.  Early intervention is the key to successful, professional treatment.  Swan Valley Psychology in Perth has been helping treat people in Perth with mental health disorders for many years.  Whilst Cognitive Behavioural therapy is often used as treatment, depending on a person’s mental health history, family health history and presentation, other psychological support may be beneficial.
