GROUP THERAPY
EATING DISORDERS The Australian Centre for Eating Disorders provides training to Professionals in the area of eating disorders. Christina has undergone intensive training in the area of eating disorders including Binge eating, Anorexia and Bulimia and Orthorexia Nervosa. Treatment for eating disorders at Swan Valley Psychology Centre follows the Cognitive Behaviour Treatment Model of Christopher Fairbairn and also the Maudsley Method for Anorexia Nervosa. Clients will learn practical and effective skills to help them deal with their eating disorder along with the exploration of interpersonal dynamics and intergenerational issues that have contributed to the disorder. Comorbidity with other mental health disorders is also taken into account at assessment and in treatment. Spotlight on eating disorders Eating disorders can include anorexia nervosa bulimia and binge eating. Eating disorders often arise in adolescence but can continue well into an adult's life. While they tend to be more prevalent in females they are increasingly seen in males as well. Disorders that are often comorbid with eating disorders are mood disorders such as depression, anxiety disorders, for example obsessive compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Trauma can also be present along with substance use disorder and or personality disorders. At SVPC we treat eating disorders using best practice Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and at times also using family therapy where necessary. Motivational interviewing is also used to help clients become more motivated to change their behaviour. Input from a dietician is usually sought. TREATMENT APPROACHES A range of psychological treatment approaches are used including:- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Schema Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (for PTSD), Solution Focused Therapy, Family Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (includes Mindfulness), Interpersonal and Behavioural Therapy. FEE STRUCTURE In accordance with the Australian Psychological Society Guidelines fees can vary depending on the psychologist consulted. See website or telephone the Centre for details.
