The effect of exercise on mood

Depression is a serious condition that can have an impact on both physical and mental health.  Many people will develop depression at some point in their lives, but it is important to know that there is effective treatment available.
Some research suggests that regular exercise may improve symptoms of depression and anxiety.   In fact, many people report exercise as an effective intervention for managing their depression.  Why then do we not all exercise regularly?  Exercise is one of those annoying things that we know is good for us but we don’t do it, or don’t do it often enough!  We’ve all experienced the feeling of having our mood improved after exercise, and yet we don’t all do it.  Regular exercise is not going to solve all of your problems, but it will make you feel better.  Here are a few reasons why….

1. Healthy body
Your body will benefit from regular exercise.  It will improve mobility, strength, fitness, metabolism and digestion.  Exercise also gives you more energy so you will feel less fatigued!

2. Self Esteem
Regular exercise can help improve self esteem, by allowing people to take an active role in their well being. Making regular exercise happen is a significant achievement for most us, with our over-stuffed, rapid-paced lives.  Doing something so positive for yourself, you can’t help but feel good about yourself.

3. A Chemical lift
Exercise is thought to have a positive effect on your brain chemistry which will naturally improve your mood and reduce symptoms of depression.

4. Improved sleep
Regular physical activity that gets your heart and lungs pumping will improve your energy levels and sleep.

5. A distraction from your worries
Engaging in regular exercise can act as a distraction and give you something else to focus on besides your worries.

6. Enjoying the outdoors and nature
Exercising outside is best because it exposes you to nature, even if it is just some trees or the weather. If you’re in the city the reminder might be more about humanity than nature but that works too.

7. Social support
If exercise is done with other people, it can reduce loneliness and provide a feeling of having social support.

Exercise has so many benefits for us both mentally and physically. If you are someone that suffers from depression or anxiety, try doing some regular exercise and you will see the benefits. The current recommendations are to do at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise on most days of the week.
