Depression can be a very difficult condition to recognise as some of the symptoms are often seen as normal behaviour.
We all feel sad at different times and we all get moody, distracted and all of us can want to have a break from family and friends. However, if we are feeling like this for more than two weeks, and no longer get pleasure from those activities we used to enjoy very much, if we are having trouble getting our work done and not being able to concentrate and withdrawing from our family and friends, well then we need to look at our thoughts and feelings. Depression is a mental health condition that is found in people of all ages including our elderly, though often not recognized and diagnosed for various reasons.
Low mood in the elderly is common. Often, elderly depression and the symptoms can be confused with other medical conditions. Changes in life that occur in the aged – death in the family or close friends, and retirement can cause these low moods. Because fewer people are around, there is less chance of noticing the depressive behaviour. Low mood in elderly people increases the risk of other health problems including insomnia or heart problems. Medications and when appropriate, psychological therapy can help treat this depressive condition in elderly people. Depression and anxiety are common conditions.
A lot of people do not fully understand the meaning of the terms depression and anxiety. They will often ask what are the differences or is it the same condition. (People can also confuse anxiety with stress). Depression and anxiety are two completely different conditions, it is not unusual for them to occur at the same time. More than 50% of those who experience depression also experience symptoms of anxiety. Sometimes, one condition can lead to the onset of the other. Depression In Children
Depression can be recognised by varying symptoms in each case. Often a child described as “moody” is actually displaying symptoms of depression.
Children of all ages are affected by the behaviour of the people in their lives, especially the parent figures. If the child experiences regular discord or friction between the parents, often the child will display a despondent mood or they may become angry and uncooperative in expressing their unhappiness. When a child loses someone close to them as in the case of a divorce, or the death of a close family member, sometimes the adults in the child’s life are so caught up in their own grieving, that the child’s emotional needs and support are overlooked.
